Child Protection

As a local authority we are responsible for investigating and providing help for children who have been abused or are at risk of abuse.

As a local authority we are responsible for investigating and providing help for children who have been abused or are at risk of abuse. Social workers and Police officers work together to assess and protect children and prepare an individual response to their circumstances. In some cases this may involve a child protection case conference being called. If the child is seen to be at risk of abuse, the child's name will be placed on the local child protection register.

  • We will assess and support children and families where child abuse is known or reported and where children are, or may be, at risk of abuse.
  • We will provide services that meet the standards set out in the Edinburgh & Lothians Child Protection Procedures.
  • We will liaise and work closely with other organisations such as Police, Health and Education departments.

Every member of the community and everyone who works with  adults, children and their families has a vital part to play in keeping children safe. If you are concerned that a child is at risk or has been harmed contact:

  • Police - 101 or 999 (in an emergency)
  • Social Work Duty & Child Protection Team - 01506 284440 (option 2)
  • Social Care Emergency Team (out off office hours) - 01506 281028/9
